Lets assume that the chicken exists in an infinate euclidean space with no intitial forces acting on it and that it is at rest on a frictionless un-inclined surface. Lets also assume that there is no discontinuity between the road surface and that of the path. The chicken crossed the road because, at some time t, an external force was applied to the chicken in the direction perpendicular (but not orthogonal) to the road along the plane of the ground. The chicken then would be accellerated across the road.
