Like all mortals, Lincoln was fallible, and had both strengths and weaknesses. From the weaknesses side, we can mention the following things-------He relied overmuch on his own judgement even i n areas where he lacked expertise, causing some diplomatic problems with the European powers. He was slow to act, and kept his Sec. of State (Seward) from acting in a more timely manner, in the Trent Affair, needlessly complicating relations with England. The suspension of many Civil Rights probably went to far----The suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, suppression of newspapers which questioned Union policy, The forced emigration of Clement Vallandigham------- He was also slow in handling the military mess he had with incompetent and insubordinate field commanders, and the Northern cause would have possibly been lost if Grant and Sherman had not "floated to the top" so to speak. The problem with the earlier commanders was that they were all disciples of Jomini in their ideas, and Lincoln was too willing to let them have their way instead of being more forceful in his direction of the war effort.


All that being said, his strengths far outweigh his weaknesses! For one thing, he was able to convince Congress that the extraordinary situationj of Civil War called for extraordinary remedies.In his time, the Congress was the dominant branch of government and had been so since the election of 1836. Starting then, no President had been reelected to office, and there had been, in fact, no strong President.......Van Buren, Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Van Buren, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan were all nonentities. By achieving the preponderance of power WITHIN Congress, Lincoln was able to effectively have a program, and to achieve parts of it with the rest at least presenting the appearance of progress.

Among his concrete achievements were the passage of the Homestead Act, the passage of the Pacific Railway Act and the establishment of the State of Nevada, all of which were accomplished in the midst of the conflict, all of which reassured the public and the world at large that he intended to accept no substitute for victory and all of which did so much to create the U.S. of the 20th and now 21st Centuries.

He also achieved what was considered almost a magical triumph. being able to hold a democratic election in the midst of Civil War. Before him and since, governments of nations in Civil War have only been changed by force and violence.

Lincoln is considered by EVERY authority to be one of the main reasons why the Uniited States was preserved and is ranked by all historians of worth to stand alone at the head of the list of great Presidents.

Yes, I agree with Jimbo. Every person succeedes and failes at something in their lives. Lincoln was president during a very crucial time of american history. He had to deal with secession, war, and slavery. All of which were not very easy. He engaged in the Civil War as a way to perserve the Union, and he is given credit for doing just that, and also ending slavery with the passing of the 13th ammendment.
Some of his failures could be noted at his choices for his commanding Generals during the opening years of the war for example George McClellan

If you believe that the means justify the ends, and if you believe the consequences of his administration are positive, then there can be no question of his greatness.
An unreconstructed Confederate might argue that his suspension of habeus corpus and indeed his use of force of arms to reunify the country were unconstitutional.
As Chairman Mao pointed out, all political power comes from the muzzle of a rifle, so the War Between the States seems to have settled the issue.

The Emmancipation Proclamation was a POLITICAL DOCUMENT. It was totally useless in the South. It "freed the slaves in the REBEL States" which had left the country and didn't listen to Lincoln. Ever hear of Jefferson Davis? You know the President of the Confederate States of America? It was done simply to have the English and French think the war was about slavery to keep them out of the war.

Yes he was a good president, he regulated the slavery traffic, stopped the southern states from creating unemployment and high prices on clothing by selling all their cotton to England and ultimately declared the abolition of slavery.
