If it's a small child, especially a family member, I say for as long as possible. It doesn't hurt to pretend to like something if it spares a loved one's feelings. I look back on some of the silly little things I gave my parents when I was a kid, and yeah they seem kinda dumb now, but even being almost 30 years old I may feel a little sad if they got rid of them.

If a child gave you a gift then you should hold on to it for awhile, because you never know when they child is going to question you about it. It's different with adults, you can just give them some type of lame excuse, but a little kid, you don't want to lie to them, they are the closet thing to God!
Peace

After a week. That's how I do it, man. Sometimes I'll ebay the gift right away so it's shipped out on the 7 day mark.

It depends on what it is. If it's artwork, keep it up for at least a week and a half, if it's a mug, only use it occasionally, if it is something else, a week should suffice.
