What is 'straight edge'?

Edit - Thanks "lukemonaghan85".

I don't know that details of 'straight edge', but I do know some things about abstinence programs. Basically, the research pretty consistently shows that they really don't reduce amount of sexual activity, STDs, and pregnancies in teenagers. The main problem is that most abstinence programs refuse to teach anything about sex and the safe ways to be sexually active, they spend the bulk of their time just trying to discourage sex. So, when teenagers 'cheat' or break their vows, which will happen with a certain percentage, those teenagers will not use condoms or other protection. There is also a greater incidence of anal and oral sex, note that anal sex has a much higher chance of AIDS transmission. The best programs (from the point of view of successfully decreasing teen STDs and pregnancies) are comprehensive programs, which teach that abstinence is the best option, but also teaches ways to safely engage in sex.

straight edger is

Somnebody who follows the straight edge philosophy. That is, a person who respects their body
*by not consuming alocohol
*by not consuming other drugs
* by not having casual sex.

Some straight edgers are also vegan(or vegetarian) but this has nothing to do with being straight edge.

Some edgers (the abbreviation for straight edgers)have become sxe (the abbreviation for straight edge) because it is "cool" but most recognise it is a healthy, mature way of life.

Straight edgers, in my opinion should not try and convert people or force them into becoming straight edge, because it is a life style choice.

Person: Hey, do you want a drink / some drugs?
True edger: No thankyou, I'm a straight edger.

--or--

Person: Hey, do you want a drink?
False trend-following edger: No, 'cause I'm like totally a straight edger and you suck because you drink. *gets out hand and shows large black cross* - for more info look up straight edge

You probably know more than me but definetly research Ian MacKaye and Minor Threat, you could even reference songs in your paper and sort of make a connection between the straight edge movement and bands that practice the same lifestyle, or who advocate it.

I think you shold write on the benifits of self restraint and their rewards, it also take charcter and control to live a life where you say no.
