Alright, the sociological answer. Get ready, it's a long one:

When the industrial revolution happened (IR), there was a huge shift in society. Previously under Feudalism you're lot in life was set. There was no movement between the classes. Men had external control. When that external control was lost because of the rise of capitalism and the fall of feudalism, internal control had to replace it. Suddenly we had the notion of the "self-made man."

Obviously, this new internal control placed a lot of pressure on men. Eventually masculinity itself became fragile. You constantly had to prove to everyone how tough/self-made you were. This fragile masculinity still exists to this day. Men constantly need to prove that they are as unlike women as possible (I'm not bashing men here). Men are constantly battling with other members of society (women and other men included) to uphold their masculinity and not have it called into question. One of the ways in which this can manifest itself is through rape. I'm sure you've heard that rape is not about sex, but power. This is true. Some (not all) rapists may have their masculinity called into question and therefore try to "prove" it by raping women.

Let me say this - I am not defending rapists in any way nor am I bashing men in any way. Men are just as constrained by gender ideologies as women are. Also, this is the sociological answer. I'm sure that other disciplines (psychology, biology) have other explanations for rape.

Hope this helps!

there are no reasons that cause rape. rape is just a poor decision made on the part of whoever is too aggressive and needs to feel powerful. the victim does nothing to be raped; that's a misconception. the aggressor is at fault.

Rape isn't about sex at all, it's about power. The rapist attacks in order to feel in control. He feels that the control he should have in his life is missing or taken away. It usually starts out with something small, maybe abusing an animal or self-abuse. When that stops satisfying his needs, he escalates to something bigger. It has nothing to do with the victim, whether she's "asking for it" by her behavior or dress. The rapist simply picks out the victim that's most likely to succumb to his attack.

Anger and hostility cause rapes. The need to feel powerful provokes rape.

opportunity - girl is alone, easy target

male stressors - desire to inflict suffering on a person weaker than him, pressure building up inside (rape is a pressure value/stress release)

cognitive rational - rapist rationalize rape by saying women are asking for it, or that rape is not a crime

Sick diluted fantasies, and feeling power over a victim.

A lack of proper upbringing. Although sometimes, that doesn't help, either. If you teach someone they came from animals, they may act like it. I realize not everyone believes in Creationism. Even if someone didn't believe in it, as some don't, no one can argue the fact that people often act like what they believe they are.
