"Amb-" usually refers to movement about, as in "ambulatory". The webster online dictionary traces the root back to the latin "ambire": to solicit votes.
The ambitious are excited by their purposive agency, but it is their gesturing that we perceive as vicious. They seem to be actors, politicians who will say anything -- are disingenuous.
A certain humility, or even reminiscence [directedness towards the past rather than the future] may be an adequate antonym, although the standard ones seem much more negative, relating to pure dissonance with activity.

naked ambition? ruthless ambition? if so, the opposite is wisdom. if by ambition you mean the strong desire to lead a useful, meaningful, responsible life, then the opposite would be sloth.

Procrastination. I always start projects 'ambitious' and ready to fly, but when I find out just how far the goal is, it leads to procrastination, out of fear of failing to reach that goal I was so 'ambitious' to attain. p.s. thanks for answering my question about 'time equals money?'-it was a good answer

Dunno, but recently i say to myself a lot.
"why the f**k should i try, i'm sick of failing"
I think that sentence sums up my lack of ambition quite nicely.
