My bf and I have been together for a year now and I was really hoping for a sort of personal gift .. maybe even a promise or engagement ring for Christmas. We're at the point in our relationship where we're living as if we are married. I accidentally found out that he got me an ipod. He has said he is commited to me and wants to live a long happy life. No proposal though. Should I be concerned with traditional standards or is a piece of paper reallty that important when tow people love each other. ?

Oh hunny....please don't think that marriage makes anything 'better' it only locks you and him down.

Would you really want him to stay with you if he didn't want to or couldn't AFFORD to leave? If he is faithful, and chooses you each day for his companion, I think that is more special than marriage.

As for your initial question....the only thing worse than getting electronics when you were hoping for jewlery is some kind of kitchen appliance or cookware! That's when you know it's over.

Old story is fastest way to end a relationship is to press for a ring. Ok so you have only been together a year. This is not even close to living together as husband and wife. You are still getting to know each other which is obvious by your question. Stop concentrating on the ring and concentrate on the fact that you should be happy that he is in your life. People move at different speeds. Once you have been together long enough he will know when the time is right or you will be in more of a place to just bring it up. As far as the Ipod.... well one of the most stressful times for a guy is when buying a gift. Sure you as a woman want personal but it takes guys forever to learn that.... if ever. Be happy that he has gotten you something and if he didn't care he wouldn't be getting you something that is over 200 dollars. Be gracious and happy again that he got something. Concentrate on that you are together at Christmas time and all that means, that you will have a future together.

your first Christmas should be something like that. I got my husband an XM radio for our 1st Christmas... but he did get me diamond earrings...oh and a bracelet, but he also got me a microwave which was weird...yeah an ipod is a great gift, but well, at least he didn't' get you like a vacuum, that would have been worse. Maybe you will get jewelry for your birthday. point some earrings or rings or something out so he knows you want jewelery. But don't push the engagement ring b/c if he isn't' ready he might get scared. Good luck.

A kitchen appliance is worse.
If you are living "as if" you are married, then don't count on getting an engagement ring any time soon. He has all he wants and needs, so doesn't have to get married - you are providing it all. If you really want something different, move out on your own and regain your independence. Then have him date you and see where it goes. Otherwise, you will get pregnant soon, and then crying on here even louder about him not wanting to get married. Just read some of the other questions.....

Commitment to each other in your hearts is as good as a piece of paper. And the worst for a gift is a vacuum sweeper or sexy lingere' when you hate that kind of stuff.

i would not get your hopes up on the ring thing at least not for awhile. when he is ready for that then he will.it has only been a year. but an ipod?? he could have gotton you something more personal other than a ring. like a necklace,or bracelet, perfume, but an ipod??oh well there is no accounting for taste is there.

Worse than electronics? Anything that has to do with cleaning or cooking.
