We have a mouse who decided to nest in the heating system, it smells really bad. We did clean out the ventilation system, so we can run the a.c. with no problems, but not able to run the heater as the smell is aweful.....

i own a repair shop,and i always get stuck doing these jobs also,,you need to take the heater box down ,and clean it,,you need a good repair manual and it will help you with the process,,but you have to drain the system on it,and remove the hoses out side for the heater core,and all the bolts are on the inside you might be able to get it down without removing the dash i know what that smell is like,and it wont go away by its self either,i have done a lot of these,and you never get used to the smell,and it gets worse also,,but it should take about a half a day to do it all good luck, your going to need it.

Buy a chilton repair manual at a book store. If not sealed copy, see if it has the info you want.
