If anyone has any experience please let me know. The guitar will cost approximately $2000. I want to know if it would still be good value after the taxes and VAT?

Take a really cheap/knackered one over with you to the US and leave it there and then bring the new one back with you. You left with a guitar and came back with one, so customs should be a doddle.

It's over £145 ($285) so yes, you may well have to pay tax. I'll be up to 20% so you need to be happy your guitar is worth it!

Just take it on as hand luggage - I don't think musical instruments are taxable.

Though on reflection on Google, I may be wrong!
