Diamler and Benz made the first commercially available motor car, but I remember seeing something on the history channel about the French building some kind of a motorized cart to haul things for their military. It was extremely crude and slow, but it is, as far as anyone knows, the first actual automobile. That was in the 1870's I believe.

This question comes up at least once a week. Most auto references credit Germans Gottlieb Daimler and his associate Wilhelm Maybach with inventing the automobile in 1889. Although independently powered vehicles have been recorded since 1771, Daimler was the first to install an Otto cycle engine into a four-wheel travel conveyance. This combination of his and other's inventions created the replacement for the horse-drawn carriage and wagon; the direct ancestor to today's cars.
