Just wanted to add that I did know the definition and thought it was weird that people didn't have a contextual idea. I was disappointed in my peers. Just wondering if others out there feel the same.

Yes. It's just another example of the dumbing down of America for easier control of the masses.

I believe that people in upper level classes should know a simple word like ambiguous, its not really that hard of a word to learn. People in upper classes should at least have a decent recognition of words and vocabulary to match.

A grade school student should know the meaning of the word "ambiguous."

a lower level highschool student should know that word. Thats the problem with computers and spell checkers and the way things arent being taught in school these days. We are turning out a bunch of illiterates and that just isnt good for anyone or anything, their self esteem included.

I once attended an ivy where I met a freshman (born and raised in USA) who wanted to become a poli sci major, but did not know the difference b/w a "republican" and a "democrat."

This is what happens when your admissions office subordinates academic merit to...other...criteria. That's all I'm going to say.

college students should be able to know how to look up words they don't know what words mean. Carry a dictionary with you.
