I sometimes receive email that says I can earn extra income by being a "secret shopper" at any one of a number of different stores. Is this legitimate or yet another scam?

Mystery shopping is legitimate however, there are many scams going around. The rule of thumb is: NEVER pay a fee to become a Mystery Shopper. Just like any other job, it's the employer who pays the employee not vice versa. I have been a mystery shopper for over 7 years and have never paid to register as a shopper. Google "mystery shopping" and weed through the results - join any that are free and offer work in your area. Some companies I recommend are http://www.shoppersconfidential.com, www.a-closer-look.com, www.a-insights.com, www.sensusshop.com Best of luck and Happy shopping!

Its another scam. There are more people who want to be mystery shoppers than there are actual positions available. So if they are in need of secret shoppers, the surely would not have to spam a million strangers. Secondly, it takes a special type of person to do it. Not everyone is capable of remaining "secret". When I worked in retail, they would actually send some of us out to competing stores to compare prices. Some employees would discreetly go into the store with the item list and get prices while other people would go into the store and brag to the manager about how our prices are better. And then a secret shopper has to be very skilled and knowledgeable in that area of expertise.

This among many other qualifications are areas that cannot be determined through email or over the internet.

I think being a mystery shopper is a fantastic job! I am a student and do it for extra cash, and I get free meals, drinks, films at the cinema, mobile phones, stamps, and much more.

Pay isn't amazing, but it's not too bad if you try and get a few jobs in the same kinda rea of town, or if you are giong somewhere anyway.

it doesn't pay very well. you can't make much in my experience.
more of a hobby.

but one person i know made money years ago checking on movie theatres for whether they were really issuing separate tickets to everyone (tearing them up) so whether they were paying the movie provider the correct amount.

yes you can, earning is legit. but the question is whether the org sending you emails is or not, you need to find out.

yes....but what is expected for the few dollars they pay you makes it a less-than-minimum-wage-job.
