Is this a tradition you do with your family? What do you think of people that put up elaborate displays in their front yard for Christmas?

I'm so happy to read it is a tradition for most of you. It takes us 5 days to put up our display. We get a lot of joy from the people that come to see. Our whole neighborhood gets involved and they even collect for charity on the weekends. It is so nice to know that it is appreciated and people really enjoy the tradition at looking at lights. Some of my neighbors are ba-humbugs but they put up lights anyways but not really appreciative of the festivities. Anyways here is a site in the area where I live that shows houses that are decorated. Check it out!! www.lightsofthevalley.com Happy holidays everyone!!

As a matter of fact, I took my daughter out last night to check out Christmas lights. She gets a big kick out of it and so do I. She loves helping me put the lights on our house and really loves helping me and mommy put the tree up. She says that folks who don't have lights on their house don't have any Christmas spirit. That's adorable when it is said by a five-year-old.

I think it's o.k. to put up elaborate displays outside for Christmas. But I would never do so. I do love to decorate my house each and every Christmas. But I use the traditional stuff that have been in my family for generations. Buying or making something new now and then. Or being so lucky to be presented with homemade decorations from people I love or care about.

Yes this has always been a tradition in my family and I now do it with my kids. But what I remember as a child in the late 70's and 80's is that not everyone had huge Christmas displays. There were just a few people that went all out decorating their homes and it seemed more exciting when you saw them. Today, it seems everyone has elaborate displays and it is starting to get boring seeing the same old blow up Santa's and huge snow globes on people's lawns.

Yes. It is a great way to spend family time together. Some people do their displays to out do the neighbor, as a source of pride. Others do it for pure enjoyment and to be a blessing to others who will see them. I have known both kinds of people. But since you can't judge another person's motives unless they tell you what it is , I say just go and enjoy the Christmas Lights. It only comes once a year.

yes we do. before having children my husband and i went out and walked around and made a night of it, now that we have to little ones (5 and 6 year old daughters), we drive around and look at them. the kids love it. we do, too. i think the people that take the time to do that are the best, they don't do it for them, they do it for US!
Merry Christmas!

Yes, I love the lights around Christmas. It is a fun time for all of us. We use a draft horse and have it pull a wagon around for us. It is all nice and cozy and a great time to share with loved ones.
