I sympathize. I'm terrified of anything that lives in water and little people (midgets). Scare the absolute h*ll outta me! Not too fond of flying things either. Can't explain it, don't know why, it's just the way that it is.

Well there could be many reasons for that- I have read some things about chimps that would also make me cautious of them too, but then it's not like we are faced with them everyday, so he has nothing to worry about. He probably has his valid reasons for being scared of them but it's nothing unusual.

Well, the good news is chances are he'll never run into one.
As for the why...I've seen shows on tv where they have behaved kind of violently and unpredictably.
I was at a zoo a few months ago and we watched a chimp take a dump in his hand, eat it, then regurgitate it back in his hand, and then eat that. Now that's scary....

Explain to him that chimps are very intelligent, sensitive creatures who are just like us. Also explain to him that even if he met one in his back garden, he wouldn't be in much danger. Chimps do not savage people for no reason, and most wild animals, even bears and big cats, will rather run away than attack.
