They are named after Paul Brown their first coach. Who eventually left the team and formed the Bengals who now play at Paul Brown stadium.

It was named after the legendary Paul Brown, their first coach. Also, the colors were chosen because Paul Brown saw Bowling Green State University's colors and liked them.
Whoever told you that, may be thinking of the Packers, who were named after the meat packers in the Green Bay area.
