i can usually open them with alot of effort but my girlfriend always has a hard time.is she just weak? or do they make these things too tight??

It's a combination of the sealing process, what is inside the jar and the temperature of the jar. I used to have a hard time opening them until I learned to tap the lid on the edge of the counter. Tapping it will break the seal enough to make it easier to open. If that doesn't work, she can put the lid under running hot water. This will make the metal expand, making it easier to open. They also make jar-openers that you can buy at homegood stores.

Sometimes there is a vacuum inside which makes it hard to open. Try pushing a spoon handle between the jar and the lid to let the air in.

its really thight so that it will not leak or the food inside will not be exposed to air that are carrying bacteria that might spoil the food inside it
