there are two types of multifunction. one with hard ware fax and the other will software fax. in your case since you asked this question go with the hardware fax. All you have to do is plug in a phone line in your multifunction machine and turn it on.

The fax side of the Multi Function Device, doesn't need the PC to be working, to send and receive faxes if you're faxing a paper document it works just like a stand alone unit. The advantage of having a PC attached is that you'll be able to create an electronic document and fax it without having to print it, some also have the ability to receive faxes as electronic document rather than have a paper version for each fax received.

Over here in the states, there are always deals on cheap ink-jet printers and all-in-one devices. Beware. Usually, they cost less up front, but over the years you PAY MORE for the ink.

Look for a low cost per page if you choose ink jet or laser. What may look like a great deal in the short term may actually be a horrible deal when you have to buy expensive ink.

In general, laser printers are less expensive. However, still check out the cost per page and the yield of the toners. Some companies offer a high yield toner that will lower the cost per page significantly.

i have a lexmark one and it does not scan it into the computer unless you hit scan. however you can fax from the computer if you want to. otherwise, when i send or receive faxes normally i don't even bother to hook up my computer to the machine. it works like normal fax.

If you have a budget and also print a lot, then i would suggest you find the cheapest replacement cartage's/ink first and match your printer/fax to the cartridge/ink.
