One of the best questions I have seen.
We do not need WMD's
They would only be a deterrent to sane governments. Terrorist fanatics would not be deterred by the thought of being wiped out. We have the proof of that.
Thisdeal has probably got something to do with the 'special relationship' between Blair and Bush. No doubt Britain will buy US manufactued weapons that can in any case only be deployed with US permission.
i think the government needs to update it's thinking and realise that the cold war is over. We now face a different kind of enemy that cannot be fought with nuclear missiles

Teflon Tony used to be a devout member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. He now realises the need for a realistic retaliatory force to deter lunatic states from attacking these shores. The theory being that it would be stupid to attack us cos we could wipe out the aggressor at the touch of a button. The only country to have ever used WMDs is the USA in the 2nd world war when they dropped 2 nuclear devices on Japan. If you subsbscribe to the deterrent theory then these weapons need to be replaced at regular intervals to be effective.
But who is going to protect us from Tony Blair and George Dubbya?

Equal WMD rights for all! It is unfair that WMDs are denied to alternatively-saned people like Hugo Chavez, Hitler, Kim Jung Il, and Howard Dean. T'aint fair!

WMDs are not evil. They are tools, just like a hammer, computer, or gun. It is the people that uses tools that are good or evil. Just like we try to keep guns out of the hands of bad people, we try to keep WMD out of the hands of bad people.
When will people stop blaming the inanimate objects, and start blaming the people that misuse them?

Just as the history of war is written by the victors, so nuclear power is controlled by the "righteous" i.e. the people who invented it and don't want to share it with others.
