I believe this is true, for the following reasons:
1) Most adolescents are not yet making their own money, or being required to do so. So they can ask for things for christmas and parents will buy them. Plus adolescent "things" are MUCH more expensive then "child things".
2) Adolescents have had at least 12 years to learn how to manipulate their parents. SO they are skilled at getting what they want. The ad manipulates the adolescent, and then the adolescent manipulates dad or mom. Kind of sick, but true.
3) Because adolescents are not yet "on their own", they have no concept of money management. So there is a natural desire to buy $hit you don't really need. Mom or Dad have jobs and know that it takes money to get things, so they are naturally more spendthrift.
Ex: Why can't I have a Playstation 3!!! It's only $600? (We adults know that this equals food for a family for a month! And don't get me wrong I want a PS3 myself, but jeez... that's a large chunk of change!)
4) Adolescents are not as jaded as adults towards commercials. Adolescents still have this sense that there is no manipulation going on in commercials, so they are more likely to be taken by the subliminal advertising. There has been research on this, and today's commercials are tantamount to mass hypnosis.
