Please don't think that The Turner Prize is speaking for all Modern Art! There IS a lot of good stuff out there - honest.

I heard a good definition of modern art the other day - something like: "It starts off where traditional religious painting finished", i.e. good examples of both types of art try to relate to the spiritual (however that may be defined these days - and I don't mean religious). I think art has to make you FEEL something - I suppose it's different for every one of us - and I know that I prefer to feel inspired and amazed - which is why much modern art leaves me cold. I gues you get out what you put in!?

My friend went to art college, and found that many students made some piece of work, like a lightbulb half-buried in custard for example, then agreed with whatever was said about it. The interpretations were founded on people's perceptions. The artists just made this 'thing' and let other people work out what it meant.
Modern art can be very inspiring and challenging stuff, but I believe there's alot of people doing whatever with nothing behind it.

a lot of folks feel the way you do. the definition of art is pretty broad these days. basically, if the creator (not God) says it's art, then it often is. there are so many different art categories now, multi-media, open-air, and such, that it is not difficult to fit your "work" into an art category. art is subjective in many cases. it's totally fine to disagree with something being called art.
