Johan, if you really want to see the best of the US avoid tourist attractions, except for Niagara Falls, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon.
Drive or take the train and soak up the vastness and variety that makes the US special. In one way or another the whole place, even New Jersey, is worth visiting.
(yeah, Key West is cool too, but the diving is better at Marathon)
The Smithsonian museums in Washington DC are free, and worth checking out if you happen to be there.
If you are interested in Colonial America Williamsburg Virginia is also worth mention.

There are some really good answers....I'll just add a few.
Mammoth Cave- Largest cave system in the world (its awesome, I saw it when I was around 9...I'd like to go back).
Moon Bow- Rainbow that happens at night over Cumberland Falls....the only other one in the world is in Zimbabwe.
Petrified Forest- Wood that has turn to stone...never seen it but think it would be cool.
Hope this helps!
