My hamster Fritz died of renal failure at the age of 2 years and 7 months (old, I know). Any idea why kidney give up in old hamsters?
Could it be something we did with food / water? The vet suggested dextrose (sugar) in the water tank and our hamster loved it!

Oh my!! Your vet is a idiot! A hamster that is this old, you did good!
So many peeps in the doctor fields, dentists etc. like to show off how smart they are by giving the technical terms to death and other ailments but not in laymen terms (which most of us out here in the real world understand).
The hamster died of old age period. You did nothing wrong, do the same thing with the next one.....
Great job!

Oh expensive - im sorry to kit this, I actual have a hamster too. Mines high quality and not something like this got here approximately to him. it might desire to be that he grow to be too chilly, If he's a syrian hamster (like mine) Which initially come from the barren area they are going for use to a warm climate yet chilly nights, did you supply him sufficient bedding? I supply my hamster 2 vast hand fulls of the mushy, cotton wool like, bedding. I additionally unfold a super style of timber shavings on the floor of his cage, probable approximately 3 Cm's thick of the stuff, i additionally replaced his water bottle ordinary for clean water, they do no longer drink lots as they're barren area animals. I additionally gave him a pair of million - 2 teaspoons of hamster muesli. I from time to time supply him some peanuts (non-salted) and that i clean his cage out as quickly as a week. And he's genuinely high quality. so which you have feed him too little/too lots. no longer given him any water. additionally in case you have cats or canines that would desire to have crossed Cinnamon, they are in a position to get very spooked by employing this, as what got here approximately while my cat have been given in the room the place my hamster is, luckily, he grow to be high quality. you probable would desire to have taken him too the vets, yet whats carried out is accomplished. some thing would have been incorrect with him even formerly you get carry of him, I even have been given my hamster from pets at domicile. There are a extensive style of diverse explanation why he would have died. consistent with possibility you have been'nt arranged, did you examine any 'how too seem after hamsters' books? Or reaserched it on the internet? Im sorry too hear he died, yet with a bit of luck this helped in some way.

He could have just been getting old.
Old people get liver spots when they get old, this is caused by their liver getting older, if a hamster reaches a certain age then he/she will get them too and this is a sign of ageing liver.
