Many teachers think that students should not ask to use the bathroom during class. A lot of teachers think this is rude and disruptive and that students should go to the bathroom between classes, rather than disturb everybody else by asking to be excused. What do you think about this? Are the students right to ask for a bathroom break? Or are the teachers right to want their students to hold it in until after class?

Well I am a teacher and have always allowed trips to the loo. I mean adults at work aren't made to wait! You soon come to realise who is taking liberties with this and just trying to sneak off for a while.

Surely using the loo when you need to is the most basic human right!

Perhaps if one of their students piddled on the floor they'd soon change their mind!

No, I don't think it is impolite. I think there are many adults that think it is irresponsible, but I am a college prof, and many of the adult students get up and use the restroom then come back to class.

Even in elementary school, when we are teaching children about responsibilities, I don't think it is impolite, or even irresponsible to ask to go to -- or use -- the restroom. I think we need to teach responsibility and respect at the same time though, like not being disruptive to or from the restroom, not to dawdle, not to peek into other people's classrooms and disturb them, and not to be disrespectful to others or the environment around them at the time of their errand.

We need to have a little bit of understanding for the people around us, and we can expect the same of others. Just my thoughts on the subject for the day.

I taught school for years, never once refused a student a bathroom break. Not one teacher I've worked with in the many years I taught ever refused either. Where are you getting your information? If you know of a case in particular you should or have someone confront that teacher. But don't say MANY teachers refuse bathroom breaks, because I don't think that is the case.

If you gotta go, you gotta go. If the teacher has asked that you gain permission before leaving then she/he has given you no alternatives. If you don't know the policy, ask. If you find yourself going too often for anyone's patience, then check out your situation medically. Could be an early sign of diabetes or other.

Little kids can only hold it for so long. So if they ask the teacher, that's rude, and if they pee their pants, that's rude, too. There's not much you can do.

That's a really stupid question - of course not - when you have to go to the restroom, you have to go - "holding it" could cause seriously embarrassing accidents.
