Emo is a much more American than British term, so it doesn't really work int the same context as chav in my humble opinion, as Chav is a class term as well as a social one.

Emo is the diet coke of goth, it is a mix of punk and goth music, where the lead singer wails a lot and there is thrashing guitar. Some of it isn't bad (Alkaline Trio are pretty good) but its characterized by painted black nail polish on men, hair that flops down over the eyes and black clothes.

There are some very funny things on the Internet about emos, for sentence the emo song on you tube where it advises them to stop cutting their wrists and start cutitng their hair, also the joke 'I wish my back garden was emo - because then it would cut itself' all in bad taste but very funny.

As for other social groups, lets not forget the 14 yr old L33T kids who play too much computer and love the 'lol omg ur teh suxxor and I teh roxxor in my roflcopter lern to play kthxbai' thing. I find them quite funny actually

All Emo means is emotional...which is why Emo music is usually slower and more lyrically oriented. It can be looked at as a derogatory term, but most of the names we make up for subcultures can be taken offensively by the people in them.

As for Chavs, I just moved to the UK and I had no idea what everyone meant till I noticed that everyone they were talking about were white kids acting black, but in a very English way.

It all depends on where you live and what kind of cultures you have around you. I've lived all over the place and there are mexican kids that love metal to asian kids that love hip-hop. It's just depends on your surroundings and particular tastes.

The only thing I can say about subcultures is that most of them are started because people want to be different and fit into a group that either sets them apart or defines them.

The only news ones that I can really see are blended mixtures from the ones you have listed before.
I don't really know too many kids that listen to just one kind of music and define themselves as one type of kid...
that's my opinion for whoever reads this...

What is an Emo?
I'm aware of Chavs and the others, but....
There is always going to be a 'group' that are 'new and radical'. Or so they think.
The young have always started their lives convinced they are going to be the ones that are going to change the world.

Emo is actually a derogatory term now, they prefer to call their music "post modern hardcore", which is rubbish.
Its like being a goth, but for kids.

Emo has been around since the 90's.

Think floppy fringes, eyeliner and piercings, miserable music and myspace.

I'm actually more into electroclash meself, but some emo music's rather good...
