How someone qualifies to get on the ballot is according to rules of individual states, even to this day.

You can't arbitrarily exclude someone, though.

I'll bet candidates not from the two main parties might disagree with that statement.

Lincoln wasn't just on the ballot in the North.The states in the South refused to recognize him as a candidate.

If I remember correctly you are talking the 1860's here. When United States was divided. The south wanted to be on there own. The south had there own person they wanted to be there president, at the moment I do not remember who it was. Though the name will come to mind after I leave here and I will say du....
