Viagra was first developed to replace or be better then Nitroglycerin, they both cause dilation of the blood vessels...obviously you know what Viagra does, which is why it isn't used like nitro. However, do to the fact that it is a dilator, if you have a history of stroke whether a TIA (Mini Stroke), or a Classic stroke you should seek the advice of your doctor. I would suggest that you not use it. If the blood vessels in your brain were to open and you have even a blood clot the size of the head of a pin you could suffer a debilitating stroke. Please seek medical attention.

Below are ther side effects. Considering the fact that you have a history of stroke, you should not take this drug without consulting with your doctor first.
>Safe dose per week/Is it safe?
That answer varies according to who is taking it.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Sildenafil citrate, sold under the names including Viagra. Amongst sildenafil's serious adverse effects are: priapism, severe hypotension, myocardial infarction, ventricular arrhythmias, sudden death, stroke and increased intraocular pressure.
Common side effects include sneezing, headache, flushing, dyspepsia, prolonged erections, palpitations and photophobia. Visual changes including blurring of vision and a curious bluish tinge have also been reported.
Care should be exercised by patients who are also taking Protease inhibitors for the treatment of HIV. Protease inhibitors inhibit the metabolism of sildenafil, effectively multiplying the plasma levels of sildenafil, increasing the incidence and severity of side-effects. It is recommended that patients using protease inhibitors limit their use of sildenafil to no more than one 25-mg dose every 48 hours.
Some sildenafil users have complained of blurriness and loss of peripheral vision. In May of 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that sildenafil could lead to vision impairment[6] and a number of studies have linked sildenafil use with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

First, one should be cautious if one has a heart problem.
Second, it is not to be taken as a medicine every week unless one wants to indulge in sex every week! One shouldn't prolong the intercourse even if one has a rocky erection! As for the overall side effects, refer to the pamphlet that may come with the pill!
