There are two modes with which checkdisk tries to repair disc problems.

All modes will not damage your files, as long as the files are not damaged by a damaged disc.

Try to imagine your discs as a book.
In the first stages (the so called logical repair) scandisk will try to find inconsistencies with the filesystem.
To stay with the book example: Scandisk will read the table of contents, and will check if the pages are still in the correct order or if there are chapters added, that are not listed in the table of contents.

These logical errors are quickly resolved.

In the physical stage, scandisk reads every sector of your harddisc, and checks if it is still safe to read and write to this part of the disc. If the disc is damaged, or losing its magnetic properties, then scandisc tries to read the data from the damaged part, and move it to an uncorrupted part of the disc.

This is like reading the book and checking if there are pages torn or holes burned through.

If the page is only torn, and the text is still legible, then the text is copied to a new page and the Table of contents is updated, about the new page content and that the torn page is broken.

If there is a hole burnt into the page, the words that are still readable are rescued to a new page, and in the table of content the burnt page is marked as damaged, so no text can be written there anymore.
However the letters that are burned by the hole are lost.
And so is the file that was written on that part of the disc.

So all in all: Checkdisk is a safe and useful tool to recover damaged content on a disc.
However: if the errors are getting worse, your harddisc will soon fail completely and it is advisable to backup your important data to another disc or on CD/DVD.
Then replace the faulty disc drive.

chkdsk does not remove files. It fixes corrupt or bad areas of the hard-disc.

If you have spyware and adware, get Adaware and remove them that way.
