I definately think religion should NOT be taught in school. If you want to study and or practice religion you need to do it outside of school. If you learn about one religion you have to learn about them all and there are a lot.

I think school should teach ABOUT religions (many different religions) and teach religious tolerance. School should not teach kids a particular religion as the truth or something they should follow or practice, only teach them ABOUT religions so that they can better understand people of other religions than their own. And I think this education on religions is best kept until the kids are old enough to understand it (I'd say late elementary school would probably be a good time to start). As for teaching kids some particular religion to follow, that's the parents' responsibility.

Religion should not be taught in school!

However that is not to say that the Bible should not be taught. While I believe that islam is a false religion it too should be offered.
But these classes should be offered as a choice to any how really want to take them.

The USA was brought up based upon the Word of God and no other religion! This may come as a surprise to some people out there but never the less it is the FACT!

By taking the Bible out of school, this was done by the vast minority, they have removed God from this country. By all the false preachers they have removed God from the homes.

This is not a land blessed by God any longer. It is ran by satan and his followers.

In USA, at a public school, a teacher may legally teach about religions, but cannot advocate one religion as being the "right," best, only, etc one. If a teacher is teaching about religion, it must be done from a historical or social point of view, not from a religious point of view if you understand what I am saying. Even so, the teacher must be mindful of how the material is being presented.

I agree with the American way because I understand the purpose of the law of Separation of Church and State. One of the reasons the USA was started in the first place was to escape the lack of religious freedom in England. In USA, religion is a very personal choice and the United States Constitution supports this choice. In this case, Freedom of Religion means your taxpayer dollars are not being used to spread any one particular religion nor are they being used to deny any one particular religion. The family unit is the best place to learn about religion because usually you are of the same faith as your parents. If we tried to teach religion in schools, we would end up with many parents upset because we cannot possibly meet the needs of all religions. Does that make sense to you?

Finally, as most teachers would likely tell you, they already have enough on their plate to teach now without adding religion, which is a very complex subject. We have churches as a great place to learn about YOUR specific brand of relgion.

I wonder why no one complains that math, science, etc is not being taught at church.

* Additional Notes
To the person who said that if a child doesn't know God then they cannot learn to respect other people (or something like that), I disagree with you. Through the years, I have personally known many children who have grown up in non-religious families who are very respectful, well-adjusted people. Many of the teachings of the Bible are in many ways good, so please don't misunderstand what I'm saying because I beleive in most of what the Bible says, but good, moral, respectful, responsible, loving parents create good, moral, respectful, responsible children that grow up to be that way as adults. Some do lose their way due to environmental influence, but it all starts at home. Learning about God is not required for a respecful life. It can help, but is not required.

* Another note --- Mpeor does make a good point. I do think that there needs to be a look at the different religions at school from a strictly "this is what they beleive" and "this is why there are conflicts" etc. Something like that so we can understand the world better would help. I honestly have no idea why there is so much hatred in religious people and why they want to bomb buildings and kill people in the name of their relgious beleifs. So, yes some education from that point of view would be helpful. I just don't think we should promote any certain faith as being the right one.

It's not illegal to teach religion in school in the US. Teaching religion as history is acceptable. Comparative courses exist everywhere. What is illegal is to teach to promote a particular religion.

In Britain we have what is called Religious Education in school. This teaches children about all different faiths and all different religions and cultures. What the harm in your child having a large knowledge of religion. They are not teaching one specific religion unless you go to a religious school eg. Catholic or Jewish school where of course they learn more deeply about these faiths. And is see no problem in that if that is what there parents have chosen for them. Me personally my child is free to learn about all the different religions there are in the world i think it makes her more understanding well rounded individual. Even though I am a Muslim my child is free to study all faiths.

I agree with keeping religion separate from school. Faith is something someone must gain on one's own, not taught in schools with the potential of being forced down peoples' throats.

Don't get me wrong; I myself am Catholic, but I still nonetheless believe religion should be optional in school and not a requirement.

its not illegal to teach religion in schools. there are many private schools that teach it here. i don't really care as long as the student agrees to the religion being taught to them and they also learn other stuff they need to know not religion related.

I believe that if a person wants to learn religion, then they can go to church.
Or maybe schools can offer Theology/Religion as an Elective. If kids want to take it then they can. If they don't, then they can take a different subject.
I don't think religion should be a required subject because everyone believes differently.

you should teach children about all diffrent religions,, like my school in saudi arabia did..they taught about islam Christianity jewdasim and others,,etc etc,,...

its better for the child to decide and look into religion by them self's..
so they wont later in life have hate for any religion, and they would know what the religion is all about,

thank u for the info that normal goverment school's, don't allow religion into their school's in America..thats why so many Americans dont understand many religions..or what they stand for,,
