This is a difficult question to answer because there are so many different spheres of achievement. If I am limited to choosing one, I would have to go with language, the ability to communicate meaningfully and productively with other members of the species because this is the basis of all culture and of everything which follows.

From a natural perspective, like the one an type of animal inhabiting the earth would have, I would say that attaining a population above 6 billion is the greatest achievment, since populating the world with one's kind seems to be the natural goal set up for all animals. Yet for me as an individual, the developement of pokemon and Magic the Gathering are mans greatest achievements :) haha

The language of each country is mankind's greatest achievement since it's the vital medium by means of speaking/hearing and writing/reading words, sentences, texts, etc. which enable its people to communicate, learn, create more knowledge, values, skills in various fields. For instance, English was initially used to communicate in the UK but so far it also has been recognized as an international language. One can travel to visit or study in almost every country in the world if he/she knows English.
