Muffler design is to muffle the sound, decrease the sound, so that it makes less noise and perceive it as quiet. It is OK to run the car without a muffler. Other cars have a primary and secondary mufflers. In my opinion, I like to drive a car quietly, fast enough, so that no one notice me when I am there. Sound travels faster than a moving object.

A hesitation on idle? I think the repairs for you car are going to be expensive. I spend $1,000 worth of parts just to pass the smog test. My car have the same hesitation problem as your car have. I like my 97 Honda Civic LX with 247,000+ miles. I replace most the parts myself, and it is very well worth it.

No. It's a very bad idea. Exhausts are designed to provide the correct back-pressure and without them the engine will run very badly. Not sure about causing damage to the engine though!

I wouldn't do this for much longer. You repair bill will be 10X the cost of fixing the muffler, if this keeps up.
