Yes, you can type personal letters, application letters, reports, books, newsletters using the format you want. You can process the text you enter in a file by giving it various colours, size. Then you can enhance them by inserting images, tables, broders, shading etc...
There are also some advance function in word that will ease your life, like preparing table of contents of the document atutomatically and so on.

Anything you can do on a typewriter, you can do with word processinbg, and much much more, like making tables, charts, spreadsheets, etc.
