Probably because we live in a society that views a nude breast as sexual or dirty.
My daughter breast fed her babies in public, but usually used a small blanket to somewhat cover her breast. I think if more women breast fed their babies, it would become more acceptable to some of the people you're referring to.
After reading some of the other answers. How the hell does someone compare breast feeding to having sex or going pee, that's just plain stupid! (No one would have a problem breast feeding their baby in front of their kids, but if you intentionally have sex in front of your kids, you need to seek professional help)

If people are having a problem with you, than you have to ask yourself 1). am i exposing myself for everyone to see my breast 2) am i really doing this in front of everyone to get attention?? I know breast feeding is important to a baby, however when i did it wasn't in front of anyone , there are places to go like bathrooms etc.. i just think it is gross to let people see your breast in public, we as women should have a little more respect for ourselves than that. And alot of people out there do think of it as a private thing (me included). I agree with what the other person was saying would you have sex in public?? It is natural. However everything that is natural should be not be for the public eye. And i think as many perverts out there now days, it just should be a no no.

Because it's icky. If I want to see boobs, I'll pop in some porn.
Sure, it's natural. So is sex. We don't get to do THAT in public!
To be fair, I don't have a real problem with anyone doing it - so long as they are discreet and covered. It still creeps me out, but I understand that's MY problem, and I must simply look away if it bothers me.
EDIT: I misunderstood your question. I have no idea why anyone has a problem with YOU specifically. You'd have to ask the people who tell you they have a problem with it.

Most of the time the people that will give the hardest time are ones who have actually never breastfed and think its sexual as opposed to natural. Just keep doing what you're doing and let them get over it.

I'm not sure how "public" you mean. Breastfeeding is a natural thing....but, it is not a spectator sport.

Because some of you mothers go to far. Go ahead and feed your baby as you wish, but be discrete and cover up.....
Would you just squat and pee in public? No.....so use the same discretion when breast feeding.

my first guess would be because you are exposing your breast in public. i understand that you are feeding your child but not everyone is ok with that and it offends some people.
