Hey! I'm doing a report on telemarketers, and I want it to be funny, so do you have any funny sayings to say to the telemarketer when the pick up, or any previous stories of what you have done. I used to telemarket the Los Angeles Times newspaper. It was a horrible job because no one in Orange County wanted the LA Times. Most of us working in the room were college age.
This story is horrible and offensive, however, so I warn you. This really happened.
I sat next to a guy named Sean. He was a notorious smart-***, and one day while we were on our 10 millionth call, a lady picked up the phone and listened to his sales pitch. She interrupted him halfway through and snapped, "This isn't a good time, my husband just died". Shocked and at a loss of what to say, he said the first thing that came to mind.
"Well, would you like some newspapers to wrap him up in?"
True story. Sick, but true. BTW, she never complained, and when you telemarket for any length of time, you get to know that certain people will say things like that to get you off the phone. Whether her husband really died or not, we never knew.

I am a telemarketer for a telephone company. I could tell you a million stories. I've heard people having sex on the phone, I've had kids say "f**k you", I've had women cuss like sailors. It's insane the lengths that people will go to. If you get a telemarketing call, hanging up does NOTHING. Cursing at the telemarketer does NOTHING, because we just laugh about how much of a wacko you are and then call you the next day. Also, saying "not interested" does NOTHING because we'll just call until you are interested. Then there are the people who think they are smart or funny and say little lines or jokes, but what they don't realize is that we hear those same things over and over every day, so we really just think they're stupid and then we call back some other time. The best and most effective thing to do when called by a telemarketer is just to say "Take me off of your calling list." and you won't get any more calls anymore.

I hate these calls, specially when the person just gives their sales speel, yakity-yakity-yak, doesn't even want a conversation with me. Some talk faster than I am able to listen. Usually I just put the phone down and quietly walk away. Some have still been talking 15 minutes later, unaware that I wasn't listening. At that point, it is fun to make a clicking sound and say "Hello? Sorry, I had a call on the other line, who did you say you were?"
I will NEVER buy anything or make a donation based on these unwanted phone calls.
