You either have really big mice or another animal got caught in the trap. Was the trap indoors or outdoors?? I have personally seen crows with mousetraps clamped on their legs, but obviously the trap would have to be outside for that to happen.
Another possiblity is that a mouse was caught in the trap and another animal took the mouse, trap and all. Do you have cats??
Good luck in finding the mousetrap and getting rid of your pests!

Yes! I have seen this happen and actually I had on disappear awhile back as well. You see what happens is that a mouse will go after the cheese or whatever you put on it and actually set off the trap, now it may not catch the mouse on the head but instead the trap will trap the mouse on a less sensitive spot, such as the tail. This not killing the mouse instantly, the mouse will run off with the trap and either die else where or somehow manage to loose the trap along the way. In my case, we eventually found a dead mouse with a mouse trap on the tail closer to the body, the mouse got trapped and was able to run away a little bit, but later died.

This is no joke, we moved into this house the mice had made nest in an old bed that was left in the garage, we set traps and went out to find them gone, Hubby said if the mouse was man enough to take the trap with him, he could have it and wished him well...LOL...2yrs later still no mouse or traps to be found.

It sounds like you have a BIG MICE problem. Your mice are probably too big for the traps. I've personally seen mice dragging glue traps with apparently no effort. Get some bigger ones or duct tape it to the floor before setting your next trap. Hopefully your mice won't die somewhere after dragging the trap to their hideout, you'll know if this happens if you follow your nose.

stuck to the cat or dog?
This reminds me of my dog while I was growing up. Not the smartest dog in the world. He tried to reach it with his paw in the middle of the night. He got ahold of it, but it was stuck to the fur on his paw. He pulled it out from behind where ever it was hidden and tried so hard to get free. (it was a sticky trap)
Well, trying to get the one leg free, he got another leg stuck, and was banging into anything he could to get free. He was so scared. Because it was in the middle of the night, we thought someone had broken into our house!
We ended up cutting his hair to get him free.

I dont think the traps would disappear on their own.
