Fishermen told you this? You mean the people that kill fish for a living? You aren't trying to kill your fish, right? So maybe you shouldn't take their advice - just a thought. Your fish are being electrocuted. Stop it.

Of course it hurts them. All animals feel pain at least to some degree. Pain is natures way of removing the animal from danger. If it didn't hurt to be next to a fire, then why would an animal run from a forest fire?
As for the electricity in the fish tank, well.. what you are doing is causing muscle spasms in the fish from the electrical currents. In order to understand just exactly what this feel like, hook up a set of jumper cables to your car battery and then wet your hands and hold the other ends. I think you'll find that the experience isn't a pleasant one.
I know of a cajun friend that used to use his truck mounted welding rig and a couple of 'outrigger' poles to drive along a bayou running current through the water. Then he'd turn around and use a net to pick up all the dead and unconcious fish along the surface. This story is to point out the possiblity that you could easily kill your fish if you subject them to electrical current.
It's not really funny, it cruel and I suggest you quit.

Batteries contain acid. Did you know that? Did you know that you're putting an acidic object in with your creatures?
If you are doubting whether your pets feel pain, and find it humorous to make them jump, you should not have pets at all. Fish are living creatures just like us. You shouldn't be asking this; if you're not sure it hurts them, you should stop doing it straight away on the possibility that it is.
Shame on you.

fish feel pain that is a fact a scientic fact.
fish are sensitive to eletrical currents many fish use this to locate prey . the fish give off different electrical signals this helps them in knowing where other fish are and what kind they are .
helps in hunting or helps keep a fish from being hunted.
you should not put the batteries in the tank anymore it is possible to kill the fish doing that . also the batteries give off gas and other chemicals which are not supposed to be in the tank
in the end if you continue you will end up with dead fish

Batteries must be creating some chemical reaction in water because of which the fish in the tank jump. These are small fish it may be having reaction on these, otherwise as 6-9 volts do not have any impact on us similarly it might not be having any impact on big fish. So you should not do it.

in view which you have a 5 gallon it particularly limits this style of fish. yet there continues to be some fish you have in there. Like Guppies, Tetras, and a Betta. Plus you would be able to desire to put in some Ghost Shrimp and a few Snails to help clean it and so as that they are cool to observe.

Where do you live...let me have your address and availability, because I have 2 extra truck batteries, which I want to connect and then shove up your a** to see how you feel...probably it will also be "funny"
You should try being a "butcher" by profession and leave fish keeping to "humans"

You are going to poison your fish with the chemicals from the batteries. You are either very stupid or very nasty. People like you shouldn't be allowed to keep animals.
