I have exctly the same feeling; currently temping and odd-jobbing, but in need of a genuine career!
I've taken an old friend's advice though, which ran along the lines of 'What did you want to be when you were at school?' and my answer came back with 'a naturalist', so I've bought myself some official Biology textbooks and am going to teach myself an extra A-level, then, who knows!
Go with your instinct - a moderately paid job you love is going to be better than a highly-paid one you hate...
Try the Myers-Briggs psychological personality test too, that should give you a bit of insight into where your career could go.
Good luck!

Teaching, beauty therapy, counsellor, be an artist? Alternatively dental or veterinary nursing? Most jobs don't pay that well at first as you have to work your way up the scale and totally changing careers will usually involve some level of retraining. Jobs that don't require training as such might be call centre work, farm work, sales role?
