The space program is important because Earth is under threat from large asteroids like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. We need to develop the tools and methods to deflect destroy or divert an asteroid or comet headed our way to save the planet. That makes it worth every penny.

The actual amount of money spent on space research is just a drop in the bucket compared to the money its cost us to care for all the obese americans that try to sue McDonalds because they could not control themselves to stop stuffing Big Macs down their throats... but seriously...

Is it worth it? The quest for knowledge and exploration of the unknown is fundemental to being human, and it can be argued that such values are imperative to the survival of our species. Aside from this, advances in technology flow down to our everyday lives, improves our standard of living, and often finds uses in medicine.

Check Jason's link! Very good.
But look at the World we live in. Look at what our Governments do (whichever!). It is a world of intrigues, roberies, jalousies, envies, murder and so on. Not that good.
US is steeling oil from Iraq with impunity on the pretext of "helping" the Iraquis.
Bush asked the Congress to give him another few billions of dollars to "complete" his "mission".
Why not using these funds to help the REAL needy?
The total WAR fund would feed NASA, education, health care ALL over the world.
We do not need wars: we need to grow up!
And to grow up, we need to LEARN.
NASA is only one of these places where humans learn...
Not in Afganistan, or in Iraq, or in killing spies from Russia...
