Everybody knows that cobras, the snakes, are really fast. But what is fast in this context, does it mean mainly that they react really qiuick or that they move their head speedily when they attack. Does anyone have any numbers on this, so that it can be compared in a meaningful way :|

A King Cobra can strike at 3 meters per second, this does not mean it can bite you at 10 feet away, it means it would take just 1 second to cover this distance.

The Black Mamba can move at speeds up to 23 km/h and are second only to the King Cobra on length as a venomous snake.

As compared with the strike of a rattlesnake, the
strike of a cobra is quite slow. The cobra doesn't
strike like the rattlesnake, it just swings its whole
body forward and down. This is so slow that if
you are brave enough you can just put out your
hand and push it back. This is one reason why
a mongoose can kill a cobra, it is faster moving.
I doubt that a mongoose could cope with a
rattlesnake.

As for traveling distance, almost all snakes are
rather slow. They seem to move faster than they
really do. I once talked with a woman who said
she was chased by a king cobra in southeast
Asia (they become territorial in the breeding season). She was with a small child and they were
on a beach. In spite of the difficulty of running on
soft sand they were able to outrun the snake and
get into their house. Some other snakes are
reputed to be faster, the mambas, for instance, but
I've never seen any definite figures on how fast
they travel.
