It can go on for quite some time. Try to get some sleep because your baby should be coming soon. I sat 2 cm dialated for a week. I'd take a nap, get dressed, walk the mall a few laps, and check back into the hospital. Personally.

You might have hours and hours and hours to go I'm afraid! With my first child I was about 2cm dilated for 12 hours! If it's not too painful, try to keep active and this should keep things moving in the right direction! I spent a lot of time in the bath but it wasn't until I got out and walked to the delivery room that things really started happening - I went from being 4cm to 10 cm within the hour.
With my second child, labour was also very slow in the initial stages, my waters had to be broken to move things along - otherwise my midwife said I could be in labour for another 5 hours (and seeing as I was already 5 days past my due date at that point I was desperate for an end to it all!)
Eat plenty of snacks and keep sipping on water, you need all the energy you can get (especially if your labour is long) and you need to remain hydrated or you'll get worn out a lot faster.
Have a nice warm bath and try and relax for a while, then do as much walking as you feel you can manage around the house. Keep resting inbetween and then do the same again.
There is light at the end of the tunnel - you will be there before you know it!
Good luck!
*EDIT* we're waiting with bated breath....any news yet?

If you aren't at the hospital then how do you know how far along you are. I would say to take yourself back to the hospital. Most doctor recommend that you go when your contractions are 5 minutes apart, and if you went last night and they wanted to keep you there must have been a reason. 5 hours really isn't long in terms of labour.
Wouldn't you rather be at the hospital just in case something goes wrong? I understand that they aren't fun places to be, but in this case it really is the best place for you.

it's bit like how long is a piece of string, some people will go from 2cm to 10cm in a matter of a few hours and with others it can take 24 -48 hours, i would consider going back to hospital though if it gets too long the hospital can speed it up and make sure you and the baby are doing ok, good luck

u should have stayed in the hospital....it could take awhile for u to go in labor but the doctor could give u something to speed the labor process up (patosin). when they hooked u up to the monitor your contractions will show up.
if they didnt discharge u they might have done something . if your still are having pains when u have time i would call your doctor and see what they say, then go bk to the hospital if they think u should go.

Why would you check yourself out?? Obviously they put you there for a reason. Now you AND the baby can't be monitored for possible problems. Go back and stop being selfish!!

Try walking.
If your bag of water is still intact, try having sex.
