A shortcut icon has just installed itself on my desktop. It's called hurl.exe. I think it's probably OK, as I seem to remember clicking OK to install something of that name and I haven't been in any dodgy websites. But can anyone tell me what it is and whether it is sinister or harmless. I would also appreciate advice on how to remove not just the shortcut link but the thing itself. (Sorry to use the technical term 'thing', but I don't know what its proper name is!)

Hurl.exe is a file associated with LoudEye.com. LoudEye works with Real to encode and deliver streaming medial over the internet.

From what i have read it is harmless.
This is a discussion about it from the Real support site:
http://real.lithium.com/real/board/message?board.id=realplayer&message.id=8673&query.id=35#M8673

On that forum it said there is a number of ways to delete it, easiest i can see is rebooting into safe mode and deleting it. But you can also try dragging it into your My Documents and deleting it.

To remove the shortcut:

↓Right-hand click on the icon
↓Select delete
↓ A pop-up will confirm that you are deleting the shortcut
↓Select OK if the pop-up is seen
↓The icon will go into your recycle bin

Now I suggest that you run a virus scan of the programme. In fact most programmes will allow you to do this through the shortcut:

↓Prior to deleting the icon shortcut
↓Right-hand the icon
↓ If you have a descent anti virus software, it will say scan this programme
↓Select this option

If your anti-virus doesn't allow to do this download AVG FREE edition.

Follow this link and read what "way out 44" says. To reboot in safe mode do a search and some site will tell you how. I don't know .

Hurl.exe is created by REal Player when you download music. You could try starting in safe mode and deleting it?

You can google 'hurl.exe' and get info that way;
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=hurl.exe&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Its something to do with Realplayer and downloaded music.
To get rid of it you create a new folder and drag it to the new folder, then either store it there or delete the new folder.

Have you tried scanning for spyware? There are many free ones out there. I found this guide pretty helpful, hope this helps. http://www.basicspywaretips.com/getridofspyware.html
