Well that depends on the society,in America they are looked down upon by a great deal of people who have fallen prey to our puritanical,unrealistic ideas. In Europe they are mostly treated as just another person or not thought about at all. And in an Islamic country if a woman were found to be a prostitute they would most likely kill her.

Whoever that girl is that said it's 'just a profession' sounds a little defensive. lmao. Prostitutes get beaten by some of their customers simply because they think they can. The word of a known prostitute is invalid against the word of Average Joe. I've witnessed groups of women just screaming away all kinds of names to strippers who happen to be just hanging out of their workplace (there's this strip bar right next to a club in my city. Being in line to get in the club is always fun given the combination of strippers and drunk girls getting out of the club). Not that all strippers are also prostitutes, but the bias is the same.

It depends on the culture. In the US, in most states, they are beaten, thrown in jail or killed, & no one seems to care. In a lot of European countries, it is legal & they are regularly tested. In some cultures, they call them by different names, & they get a little more respect like another wife (wives). I believe any victimless crime should be left alone. Go after the murderers, rapists, child molesters, wife beaters, etc.

Worse than your average criminal. Prostitutes are viewed as not even being human, they seem sub human. A human being would not solicite themselves.
