i am just trying to find out what preceded the pc

Before IBM in personal computers, there was only really Macintosh, with the apple line. Before that there was large data computers that often would take up a whole room and only do limited processing, with no graphical os. I recommend doing a wiki search it you want the specifics.

ZX81 and ZX Spectrum. They used to use cassette tapes instead of floppy disks to work.
