It's funny that you ask that. My best friend and I used to watch SportsCenter and count the number of cliches used. It's not just the sportscasters, it's also the players and coaches when they are interviewed, so you get way into the 100's and sometimes 200+.

My personal opinion is that with the popularity of sports and the amount of media coverage they get, they need a common language to talk about what they are doing. Since we're really not talking about rocket science here, cliches are probably the most "creative" way of communicating.

First, there are certain things they say that do become catch phrases. Then again, you have one like Chris Berman who has a habit of using everyone else's catch phrases and mimicking them to create his style of calling hi lights.

Second, in reality, how many original ways are there to call a good catch or dunk anyway? Realistically, the phrases will only change as the language changes.

They have to talk so much, that they can't come up with something different or interesting too often.
