you need to use the spell checker for a specific word and it gives you 5 different spellings, how do you know which to use if you don't know how to spell it in the first place?

I would go with the first spelling offered, but you should have an idea of the word you are tracking down. I will admit that there are some squirrelly spelling options offered.
I misspelled "offered" in this answer and it gave as an optione "evened". Well, I knew I didn't want evened, so you can puzzle it out (one reason spellcheck isn't used)

Are you sure you do not atleast know the other words? Like lets say you want to spell "lamb" and you typed "lam". Then in the spell check you have "lamb", "lame" and "lamp". Won't you know which you were looking for as you knew the other two words' meanings?
