Yes, they're expensive.

Evaluate why you want an X5. If it's because it's a BMW, compare it to the X3 and 3- and 5- series wagons.

If you're looking for luxury in an SUV, there are a number of alternatives. The Acura RDX, the Infiniti X35, the Cadillac SRX, and the Lexus RX350 are all under $40K. I'd also take a look at the Subaru B9 Tribeca. All of these are similar (sporty SUVs) to the X5. The Mercedes ML line is as well, but isn't going to be cheaper than or outperform BMW.

If you're just looking for a practical solution for a family, there are a number of options. Wagons by Audi (A4, S4, A6) and Mercedes (C and E series), as well as BMW and Subaru (Legacy) are the most practical and sporty. There are also a number of large SUVs by GM and Ford that are lower priced - and the big three make high quality trucks, so reliability isn't a concern. Honda and Toyota in particular make a number of mid sized, near luxury SUVs, though the prices can approach those listed above when optioned similarly. Cheaper options such as Kia or Hyundai are going to be just that, but are certainly a viable alternative if price is an issue.

Yes they are expensive, not only to buy and service but run. Having said that they are very nice (and Safe for the occupants) try looking at the Mercedes M class, this has been fairly recently given a face lift and some older models will be reasonably priced. If you want an X5 try waiting another 12 months or so, I think a new version is being launched in 2008, so you could pick up a bargain.

if you want a current generation x5 and think its too expensive, the x3 is a lot cheaper. it is ugly but it also has about the same interior space. the next generation x5 due out soon is a seven seater if you need the extra space. if not prices for the older generation will drop a lot or even a last run of the current model since everyone will want to be seen in the latest model. plus bmw usually throws in a lot of little changes or special model designation for the last build year for each model.

Yes they are a little on the expensive side but look at what you are getting. BMW performance and handling, features like Navigation, hands free blue tooth tech, now third row seating, rear climate. Not to mention 4/50 warr and Maintenance. Nothing out of pocket, oil change are covered and even the wiper blades are covered so nothing out of pocket just put gas and go. worth looking into.

That depends. If you work at McDonald's yes if you own McDonald's no. Expensive is a relative term. If you are going to have to stretch your budget to buy one then get a car that cost less.

Yes they are expensive but with cars you get what you pay for. If you want a 4x4 you would struggle to find a better one.
