You can't determine an acre in metres, any more than you can determine volume in acres (or hectares). Metres measure the distance between two points, whereas acre is width times length. The acre is a standard measurement in the UK (if an imperial one) for fields etc. The most famous account of such is the Hundred Acre Wood, used by A. A. Milne for Winnie the Pooh.

An acre isn't big at all. Its a long hard day's work. You see; the unit of measurement relates to ploughing a field using a horse or ox pulled single plough.
The longest furrow a farmer could plough in a dead straight line is reckoned to be 1/8th of a mile. Longer than that and you can be sure that there's a bend in the furrow somewhere. From the length of this furrow we get the unit of length "furlong" - a furrow long. This measurement is still used in horse racing.
Any how. This farmer, with his horse and plough, goes up and down his field that is 1/8th of a mile long. He does this all day - apart from stopping for his ploughman's lunch - and at the end of the day the farmer has ploughed an area that is 1/8th of a mile long by 1/8th of a mile wide.
There are 1760 yards in a mile, so the farmer has ploughed 220yards by 220yards = 4840 square yards. This is one acre and the reason behind it.
Metres describe the distance that light travels in a certain length of time. Boring huh!
Bring back the plough and the ploughman's lunch, I say !
