We know that forests, oceans etc are important to the climate and ecology of the world. It doesn't seem that deserts serve any purpose to life on Earth. If that is the case, should humans use their technology to change deserts to other types of landscape such as forests or grass?

Humans should use the technology and convert the deserts into forests or something else as the population has been increasing and the necessity of natural resources has increased. So if you convert the deserts into forests you get more wood for the growing population and if you convert them into landscapes you get more land to live in.
