Most people purchase computers more powerful than they really need. The smart ones, figure out just what they do on their computers and look for something that fits those requirements. Unless you are a serious gamer most low end to middle end computers are affordable and are what MOST people really need; Altough the laptops usually are a little more expensive the one hundred or so dollars is well worth the expenditure. I have both, an expensive large honkin' desk top very powerful and a middle of the line laptop.
I do a lot of photo work and I found that I can handle everything on my laptop with absolutley no problems and now I hardly ever turn on the desk top system. I use it mostly as storage system for work I do on my laptop. I paid over $4,000.00 dollars to have the desk top built to my specs and I bought an off the shelf Acer 17 inch 9410AWSMi for $1200.00. The advantages of the laptop more than make up for any disadvantages.

Upgrading is somewhere between impossible and difficult.
Spill coffee on a PC's keyboard and a replacement can cost <£7, do the same on a laptop keyboard and it's normally the end of the laptop or the start of a large repair bill.
Less likely to drop a PC.
Less likely to have PC stolen or be mugged for it.
If one element of the laptop breaks down(screen/drive) if it can be repaired it costs a lot more to do.
An old PC can often be given a new lease of life by adding new hardware, if same could be done for a laptop it's not normally worth the installation charge.

properly laptops are nice for the artwork maximum persons do yet they only don't have the ability to do video enhancing gaming or save somewhat a lot of files. pcs will continuously be more advantageous powerful than laptops because you've more advantageous room in there to positioned elements. also with a operating laptop or computer if the show fails you could only plug in a sparkling one. they're a lot less demanding to artwork with hardware-smart. all round in case you do not actual favor to be on the bypass and comprehend slightly about pcs pcs win everytime. Oh and also cost. I were given a operating laptop or computer more advantageous suited than all although the very perfect laptops (study a number of thousand dollar machines) for type of $500.

There are quite a few disadvantages, but also many advantages. The big disadvantages are that you can't upgrade the laptop easily, they are more expensive, and if you put it on your lap it gets very hot after prolonged use. Oh, and your posture will suffer as to use a laptop normally requires you to hunch over as the screen is lower than a desktop.
Advantages are that it is portable, funky and laptops are more social computers (you can sit anywhere in a house using it, rather than couped up in the back bedroom).
Laptops rule!

The batteries are usually quite expensive and they don't last long. The LCD screens are not as sharp as desktop PCs. The cost is higher (and especially by the time you add a case, external mouse, speakers, etc). You can lose a laptop rather easily. They make sense for people who travel and for students but not for the average person surfing the internet.

laptops are great for engineers who need to travel and access various equipments and use the net on the move. They can be good in business if you need to travel with your data. They are quickly out of date, expensive, not mobile as they require a power source, and generally bad for your posture. Unless you can get someone else to cough up for one don`t go near them. Desktops can be upgraded by even the most armature users with a bit of research which is freely available on the web. If they can solve the power/ battery problem they may be viable what with VOIP and streaming video services in the future. Why do you think they are constantly being pushed by all the company's concerned.

Upgrading and modification is the key. Sure, a desktop is not portable but if you wanted to put cards in order to perform specialist tasks, it will be a lot more expensive with a laptop if it is possible at all.

The main one is that its more expensive. You have to pay more to get a same spec laptop as a PC.
Its also harder to upgrade. You also might not like the screen and the keyboard, it will likely have crappy speakers, and so on. PCs are put together piece by piece so you can have any components in there you want.

As well as the above answers, laptops are much more difficult to upgrade.
They also have cooling issues, in that they run quite hot. Its easy to add another fan to your PC, but you can't add one to a laptop.
If you buy one, buy the highest spec you can afford so that you won't have to upgrade in the near future.
