I don`t think that matters, it is where they are now that is important. The team could hardly be blamed for the financial failure of the club. Now that there is money available again, they have been able to buy in good players and on the whole they have been playing very well as a team.

CFC was still a very solid club under Ranieri with some fantastic players. I'd say firmly in number 2-3 spot each year. Well absolutely definitely in Top4.

did you not know the money has nothing to do with it ???
ballack £130,000 a week
shevchenko £130,000 a week
dogbreath £120,000 a week
terry £100,000 a week.
all these players dreamed one day of playing for chelski fc (who)
in fact as a kid ballack was the only kid in a 300 mile radius who had a chelsea top because he wanted to different, and now with russian mafia money he can.
to answer your question someone would have come in and rescued them financially, but mid-to-lower table.

if i remember right chelsea where only days from going bankrupt. good old ken bates and his chelsea village project had brought them to the brink. roman was ment to be going to buy spurs but ken got in at the last moment and hijacked the deal.
so if they hadnt got the dosh they would have ended up in a bigger mess than leeds

mid table, maybe fighting for a chamions league spot. No Mourinho, shevchenko, drogba, cech, ashley cole, essien, ballack etc, etc, etc. Surely players like lampard and terry would have been snapped up by other clubs such as liverpool and man utd.

Chelsea would not exist if it wasn't for Abramovich. As a team beforehand they were very good but money has taken them to the top.
