I had really bad episodes of back pain and started swimming in a heated pool using swim fins, gradually at first ,every day and increasing the number of laps. This really helps to build up your stomach and lower abdominal muscles. This helps to support your spine, also celery tablets and glucosamine.nurofen plus if you need a break from pain on those bad days.

In years gone by the remedy was rest for days or even weeks just laying down on a solid floor or very firm bed.
The problem with this was that the muscles that you have in the back to help support you went flabby and your back was put under more strain. Now the recommended way is to exercise, carefully, to walk a lot and keep everything moving and toned up. Pain killers are a mixed blessing as they mask the pain and you are likely to do things which would aggravate the condition. Obviously don't try to lift heavy weight and even lifting light loads try not to bend the back to do so. Always keep a straight back. Don't twist your back to do things, turn your whole self. Observe these rules for ever and you will not have back pain again.
Best of luck and have a nice Christmas.

I don't think pain is the *only* remedy...there is love, laughter and the company of others that can work wonders on a broken soul. However, I do prefer to embrace the pain rather than numb my mind and body. All I would be accomplishing is ignoring the pain for awhile, not dealing with it. An unresolved issue that goes away on its own has a tendency of also coming back on its own as well. At least by embracing the pain I can thereby deal with it...with the help of family, friends, laughter and yes, probably a lot of tears.

Eva, I have to worn out discs in my spine at L1 and L2 region. I have found that the best thing for my back has been doing Ashtanga Yoga 3-5 days a week. I've never felt better.

I know exactly how you feel, I have scoliosis (a curve of the spine), I am receiving a date on 15th January, for major surgery to correct my spine. I suffer from intense back pain. The best solutions I have found are cocodomol (the only tablet which lifts some of the pain), heat or pressure applied to the back, and a good massage. Hope this helps x

-Take two or three cloves of garlic every morning.
-Apply a cold pack (bag of ice) to the painful area for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Apply at least three times a day.
-Get regular, low-impact exercise. Some gentle yoga exercises can help to relieve the pain.

Apparently, (I read this in Daily Mirror) acupressure is very good.
U can buy a book on it & do it ur self. One I found recommended on Amazon was:
